Born in Kota Bharu but bred in Batu Gajah, Fakri made his senior debut for Perak in the Malaysia Super League match against Negeri Sembilan on 24 March 2007. He scored a hat-trick and had an assist in this game, which was won by Perak 5–1.
He was promoted to Perak first team from President's Cup team (the reserve team) as the senior team striker, R. Surendran was with the Malaysia senior on a playing tour of Sri Lanka.

In 2008, Ahmad Fakri was seconded to Harimau Muda, a Malaysian Premier League team made up of members of the Malaysian Under-20 national side.
In November 2010, Malaysia coach, K. Rajagobal called up Fakri for the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, but he was later ruled up by injury during the 2010 Asian Games. He was later replaced by Mohd Ashaari Shamsuddin.
He has been in Transfer Rumors to club Division 3 Portugal League in 2013 January transfer
Fakri's three-day trial with Atletico Sport Clube Reguengos, a Terceira Division (third-tier competition) Serie F side, is only a formality as the club's head coach wants to sign the striker immediately after watching video footage of him in action.
Established in 1929, Atletico Sport Clube Reguengos are currently fourth in the 12-team league with 12 points from seven matches.
Argentine Ernesto Sanchez and Tanzanian Abuu Ubwa Zuberi are among the club's seven foreign signings.
Football agent Marco Guimaraes confirmed yesterday that several clubs from Portugal's lower divisions are also interested to offer trials to six members of the Young Tigers A squad.
Guimaraes is working closely with those concerned including the FA of Malaysia (FAM) and Tigers' coach Ong Kim Swee to arrange trials for the selected players.
Fakri also had an offer from Nazmi Faiz Mansor's club Beira-Mar, a Portuguese Premier League side, in August but after weighing the prospect that he may not play for their first team, he opted for the Terceira Division club.
A member of the national Sea Games-winning squads of 2009 and 2011, Fakri said: "It's hard for me to describe my feelings. To play in Europe has long been my aim.
Fakri will head for the club's base in Lisbon immediately after the completion of Malaysia's AFF Cup matches.
A regular with the national youth team, Fakri played in the 2010 Asian Games but missed the AFF Cup due to injury.
Guimaraes, who also represents Nazmi, made the deal possible due to his close links with the club.
"Atletico wanted him in Portugal in August but Fakri was involved in the Malaysia Cup. He will only sign for six months. He needs to prove himself during that period and if he impresses, he may even get offers from other Portuguese clubs," said Guimaraes.
"Beira-Mar wanted him for a trial but after considering the level of Malaysian football and his age, I felt it would only be proper for him to play for a third-tier division side. He will be 24 next year and it is considered a mature age for European football.
"In Nazmi's case, it is different, as he joined Beira-Mar as a 17-year-old and he has time to develop his game and prosper."
Guimaraes hired former Felda United manager Faisal Zakariah as Fakri's personal manager.
