| Posted: 24 Apr 2012 05:21 AM PDT The S.League champions have reached the knockout stage in all four of their previous appearances in the AFC Cup but they appeared likely to miss out this year after managing only one point from their first three games. But a 2-0 away win over Malaysian side Terengganu two weeks ago revived their campaign and put them back into a position to qualify for the last 16. Although Rovers remained in third place with four points, two behind Terengganu and five adrift of Kitchee, they now control their own fate and can progress past the group stage if they beat Kitchee at the Jalan Besar Stadium and also win their final game against Song Lam Nghe Anin Vietnam. "The simple fact is that we now need to win our next two games in order to progress to the next round," said Tampines coach Steven Tan. "No one gave us a chance to get a result in Kuala Terengganu but the players performed above expectations and we got what we needed that day. "We are certainly in a much better position than we were before that match but we still need to play well and win the next two games to qualify." Tan is hoping to see an improved performance by his side on Wednesday from their first meeting with Kitchee in March when they lost 3-1 in Hong Kong. "In our first match against Kitchee, we were a bit naïve in our approach and we made some costly mistakes that allowed them to score twice in the second half," said the Stags boss. "If you make mistakes in a competition like the AFC Cup, you can be punished so we have to stay disciplined and not make such silly errors again in order to get a result." Kitchee would seal their place in the last 16 with a draw, but coach Josep Gombau is expecting a tough encounter in Singapore. "I'm expecting this game to be more difficult that the one we had in Hong Kong," said the Spaniard. "We are playing away from home and we are also not so familiar with the playing conditions and we cannot decide how the field in maintained. "I am concerned about the fitness of our players. When we met Tampines Rovers for the first time, we were midway through the season while they were just starting so they had a bit of an advantage. But we are now near the end of our season and our players are tired because we have played many games over the past two months while Tampines are gaining momentum." Both teams will be missing key midfielders for the game with Tampines' Fahruddin Mustafic and Kitchee's Huang Yang suspended. Meanwhile the other Group F game takes place on the east coast of Malaysia, where Terengganu entertain Song Lam at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium. While Terengganu have won both of their away matches in the group so far, their home form in the competition has been poor with no points and no goals after successive 2-0 losses against Kitchee and Tampines. The Turtles have only one win and three defeats in their last five games, including a disappointing 2-1 home loss to second division side Sime Darby in the Malaysian FA Cup last Saturday, According to coach Mat Zan Mat Aris, fatigue is a major issue for his side right now although he intends to field a strong lineup against Song Lam. "Players like Ashaari (Shamsuddin), Shukor (Jusoh), Manaf (Mamat), Muslim (Ahmad), Faizal (Mohamad), (Francis) Doe and Baiano (Erison Da Silva Santos Carnietto) have been playing almost three matches a week since last month and are as good as burnt out by now," said the Terengganu coach. "But it is crucial for us to win over Song Lam as a win will almost guarantee us a passage into the second round and we are not going to miss this golden chance too." While Terengganu have been struggling of late, Song Lam have been in much better form with only one defeat in their last eight games in all competitions. However, they will be without defender Tran Son Ha and midfielder Phan Doan Thai Thanh Dat after both picked up their second yellow cards in the 1-0 win against Kitchee two weeks ago. | ||||||
